What this site is

GetYourPermit is a free planning tool for California homeowners. It estimates the permit and related fees for an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) by city, and summarizes how each city’s permit process works. It is free to use and requires no account.

Where the figures come from

Our California permitting experience guides the questions and categories. Each public fee value is presented at one of two evidence levels:

  • Published sources — city fee schedules, ADU pages, and permit portals. We provide a link when the source supports the displayed value or process statement.
  • Working estimates — where a city publishes no usable line item, an unverified early-planning assumption that must be confirmed with the city.

Our methodology explains how these are combined and how to verify them.

Estimates are not quotes

Figures on this site are preliminary estimates for early budgeting. They are not a quote, a government fee determination, a permit approval, or legal, financial, or engineering advice. Actual fees depend on your parcel, your plans, your construction valuation, your utility provider, and the fee schedule in force on the day your permit is issued. Confirm every number with your city before you commit money.

Using the site

You may use, print, and share reports for your own planning. You may not scrape the site at scale, resell its data, or present its estimates as official city figures. Content is provided “as is”; we do not warrant that any figure is complete, current, or error-free, and we are not liable for decisions made on the basis of an estimate.

Corrections

If you are a city official or a homeowner who has a more current figure, tell us at hello@getyourpermit.app and we will review and update the line. See also our privacy policy.
